Maeve Binchy is an Irish writer from Dublin, and I was not familiar with her writing. I ordered a $1.99 digital copy of this book from Amazon through BookBub and took a chance. I was not disappointed.Initially, I thought I would be bored but I was pulled in quickly. The characters became alive to me and they were with me throughout the day. I was so disappointed when the story ended because I did not want the story to end.Benny, a heavy, big girl with a lively spirit, lives a very sheltered life with her family in Knockglen. When she goes to the University in Dublin, she has to take the bus home at night instead of staying with the other college kids in Dublin. Nevertheless, she meets handsome Jack Foley who falls in love with her and she with him. His immaturity in his love for her causes problems when Benny is occupied with helping her mother and saving the family business after her father’s death. Jack’s inability to wait a few weeks for her to be with him, results in a weekend fling with another girl and then an affair with Nan, one of her best friends, who falsely declares he is the father of her baby. This affair is even more insidious because they use Benny’s friend Eve’s cottage without permission.When Nan miscarries, Jack wants Benny back, but, although she still loves him, she understands she could never trust that he would remain faithful. Through all of this, she still has her good group of friends, her circle of friends.Maeve Binchy has written quite a few books as well as plays. I am eager to read more of her work. She has no funds for university, unless she learns to overcome her pride & ask the Westwards to pay her tuition fee.In Dublin they meet handsome, popular Jack Foley, cinnamon roll of the University & beautiful, cool Nan Mahon, who is playing a dangerous & ruthless game to get away from her aggressive, drunken father's house both geographically and socially & to land a rich and upper class husband.The scene is also enriched by a set of very well drawn supporting characters both from the big city & the small town and you cannot help to laugh, cheer, curse or cry as the story unfolds.
