Bought based on a good review in NY Times. TERRIBLE book. Narrator and her sister (who speaks for herself via incredibly long letters) are unbelievable and unpleasant people, as are their friends. Both their stories are flat-our ridiculous. No one learns anything. There is simply no saving grace to this. I skimmed through to the end just to find out what happened to them. (Early on the narrator tells us how her sister and her husband end up, but I wanted to find out HOW.) I feel soiled by spending as much time as did living vicariously in their world. It's Edmund White. It's got dirt poor Texas twins, Yvonne and Yvette (Pronounced Why-vonne and Why-vette) who become oil heiresses. It attempts to illuminate dualities of personality, intellect and spirituality. Yvonne is the twirler, the sorority girl, the debutante and ultimately the Baroness. Yvette is the brain, the one aware of racial injustice, the passionate nun serving the poor in Jerico, Colombia.So why doesn't this click?Contributing to the lack of click is White's unfamiliarity with the internal lives of women. These two women, unfortunately, examine their lives endlessly without arriving at transformative insight.
